DUI a Felony in Colorado?

Proposed House Bill 14-1036

Colorado Springs member of the House of Representatives, Mark Waller is proposing to make a DUI conviction(Driving Under the Influence) a felony in Colorado. His proposal would make a 3 rd DUI within 7 years or a 4 th DUI ever a felony. This proposal, would count a prior DWAI (Driving While Ability Impaired), or a DUI per se (driving with excessive alcohol content) as a prior in the calculation. If convicted under the proposed law, you would be convicted of a Class 4 Felony, which has a sentencing range of 2 years to 6 years in Prison.

This is a completely draconian measure, which would turn ordinary citizens into felons, maybe now that Colorado Springs Representative Mr. Waller is no longer running for Attorney General and needs cheap publicity he will back down, still there is a very real chance that this bill could pass and making a DUI a felony.

What does this mean to you today, if your charged with a DUI or a DWAI in Colorado Springs, Cripple Creek, La Junta or anywhere in the great state of Colorado?

You need to get an experienced DUI Lawyer who has successfully handled DUI and DWAI cases in the past. You don't want to just plead to the charge and get a conviction on your record, for if your charged in the future you could be that much closer to being found a felon on a future charge.
